Research says retirees are happy. I believe that. It’s not hard to be happy with new-found freedom. But I know that most people retire and never get beyond the dreaming stage. Many lower expectations… but secretly hope a better life will find them. Others lose confidence in their value and talents. Some will accept boredom as part of the package.
In other words, they are happy but they could be happier.

At age 65, confused and unsure about what my future could be, I almost settled for an “OK” conventional retirement with a usual uptick in happiness. I thank my stars I didn’t.
Instead, I worked to understand and learn how to crack open one of the most worthwhile and difficult transitions life now offers. Today life is full of wonder and joy-filled with work I love, freedom, play, a loving, re-worked marriage and new as well as old friends. And oh yes, I’m a cracker-jack grandparent and no, I didn’t win the lottery!
